When asked what advice she would give to aspiring small business owners, Sherrie of The Cultured Pearl of Charleston stresses the importance of continuing to learn, not giving up, and remembering to have fun. We couldn’t agree more, Sherrie! The Cultured Pearl of Charleston LLC (formerly The Pearl Girl of Charleston) is currently going through a name change – we know a little bit about that! – to make the business a brand of it’s own, and we fully support that. Not only is this company fun and fabulous, but Sherrie herself is one of the sweetest people we have ever met. It was truly a pleasure getting to know her at the third Charleston NotWedding, and we cannot wait to work with her again at The Big Fake Wedding Charleston in April.
“Sherrie not only has beautiful products, but is an absolute joy to work with. She’s one of those vendors that I can see our clients building solid relationships with. She approaches her business with both confidence and humility and it serves her well.”

Tell us a little bit about the story of The Cultured Pearl of Charleston.
My husband, Tim, works for an American denim company in Zhejiang province of China which also happens to be the epicenter of freshwater pearl farming. While spending time exploring China the last six years I have become fascinated with pearls and their natural beauty! I had no idea that pearls came in so many colors and shapes and have had a lot of fun learning and spending time with the suppliers who work with pearls every day. Their patience and encouragement has been a huge part of my deciding to start The Cultured Pearl of Charleston LLC.
What is the best part of your job?
Seeing the looks on my customers’ faces when they handle the beautiful pearls and select just the right ones that please them. It is a learning experience for them as well as myself.
Who’s your biggest fan and why?
My husband and best friend, Tim. Since the day we met he has clearly made me feel totally loved and supported in whatever decision I’ve made or crazy idea I’ve had. Been trying to figure out how to get him to wear pearls, though…cufflinks maybe?
What advice would you give to aspiring small business owners?
To keep in mind that it’s a continual learning process and to not give up easily. There are a lot of great resources for new small businesses that are either free or not too costly, so be sure to explore what’s available in your area. Also, remember you need to have fun with your business!
What is your favorite part of The NotWedding experience?
It is energizing being involved with all of you who are so excited and passionate about your work while encouraging strong marriages! I believe your platform of promoting small businesses is unique and will be a key to huge success for The NotWedding concept as you grow.
