As any couple starts to plan their special day—especially in a region as full of inspiration, romance, and history as the Cape and Islands—naturally, an urge to adorn the celebration with details that are both festive and personal arises. With so much wedding inspiration out there, it can be hard to know where to start—and I face the same choices as I curate the pages of WellWed.
Couples often ask me if there’s a secret to getting things started with wedding décor, and the truth is, it’s best to go with the vision that’s in your heart, and then draw inspiration from your surrounding. Cape Cod is rife with natural beauty and bursting with locally made treasures and fabulous antique offerings. If you’re planning to say “I do” by the beach, use the colors from the sea and sand to influence your color palette and then get set combing area flea markets and estate sales for authentic nautical accents. As soon as you decide on a theme, adding the details will be a snap.
I also always encourage brides to blend hints of luxury along with a strong current of rustic charm. The juxtaposition of old and new, rough-hewn and decadent, vintage and DIY, will ultimately reflect how you and your betrothed are bringing two lives together in order to build a happy future.
Finally, if Cape Cod is a destination for you and your loved ones, use favors and goodie bags as a way to both give a nod to the locale and to try your hand at crafting. Experiment with emblazoning tote bags with a signature logo, or bagging up sweet treats (might I suggest locally-made candies) in handcrafted satchels. If DIY projects aren’t your cup of tea, try making a charitable donation for each guest in lieu of favors.
