Our vendor of the week today is Abby, who owns a cake baking and decorating business called Creative Crumbs. She was our wedding cake vendor at The 1st Nashville NotWedding, and her mouth-watering creation – incorporating peaches, pistachios and more – was practically the talk of the evening! Here’s a little look into the mind of a small-business baker. Enjoy!

What is the best part about your job?
My favorite part of the job is meeting with brides and grooms (and often their friends and family!). I love hearing their love story…how they met, how he proposed, what her mom’s cake looked like….all those little details that make each couple unique. As I’m creating their cakes, often many months after our initial meeting, I still remember talking with each bride and groom. Each cake has special meaning and is a work of art crafted just for them.
What has been the scariest part of owning a small business?
For me, that scariest part has been working solo. As a “one woman show”, I do it all…the meetings, the baking, the decorating, book keeping, and yes, even the dish washing! At first it was a challenge to balance everything, but now I have a routine so that everything has a time and place.
Describe a highlight or pivotal moment in your career.
The biggest highlight of my career so far has been starting my own business. It was definitely a leap of faith in many ways, but it has been so much fun! I have learned many things, met some incredible wedding pros, and worked with some of the most amazing couples.
Is there an app or computer program that you couldn’t live without?
I use an app called TripLog, and it has been a lifesaver! When I first started, I attempted to keep track of my mileage the old fashioned way with a pen and pad, but that just didn’t work for me. I drive all over town picking up supplies, meeting with other vendors, and delivering cakes, sometimes in my personal car and sometimes in my delivery van, and this app is perfect! It allows me to track mileage in multiple vehicles…all in one place. Plus I can download the mileage records to my computer, which makes tracking expense and doing my taxes so much easier!
